While this may have been secure in the past, it can now be defeated by a hacker with access to the right hardware and software. In February 2019, the team building hashcat stated that the tool can be used to search the entire space of eight-character passwords in about 2.5 hours. Since most users will choose the minimum length when creating a password (especially when capitals, lowercase, numbers and special characters may be required by configuration), this means that these passwords can be cracked in a few hours.
As described in a recent report, Hive found that an 8-character complex password could be cracked in just 39 minutes if the attacker were to take advantage of the latest graphics processing technology. A seven-character complex password could be cracked in 31 seconds, while one with six or fewer characters could be cracked instantly. Shorter passwords with only one or two character types, such as only numbers or lowercase letters, or only numbers and letters, would take just minutes to crack.

Passwords and firewalls are just not enough. Besides, Windows does provide data encryption facilities but experts question its efficacy. A Gartner study warns that the Windows password can be cracked in as little as 14 seconds. With less than $100, anyone can purchase password-recovery tools on the Internet.
The cracked password for a PST file does not resemble the old password. The Recovery Toolbox for Outlook Password has found a password for a PST file and shown the first 3 characters that did not appear in the original password.
Windows stores hash values for user passwords in the SAM registry hive. With access to the SAM and SYSTEM registry hives, OSForensics can recover the LM or NT hashes for the local Windows user accounts. To retrieve the hash values, go to the Windows Login Passwords tab in the Passwords section of OSForensics, select the appropriate device to scan and click the "Acquire Passwords" button. You should see a list of recovered usernames and hash values, and if you check the "Test common password" option you may see some simple passwords that were immediately cracked.

The macro will report a cracked password, which is not the original one (always some combination of A's and B's), but nevertheless it works. You do not need to remember this fake password or enter it anywhere. Simply click OK and the sheet is unprotected!
Tips and notes:
Even the strongest hashing algorithms cannot protect a weak password from being cracked. To prove this, SpyCloud performed our own password cracking experiment against sets of passwords varying in complexity and protected by varying hashing algorithms.
We tested these passwords encrypted four ways with MD5, MD5 Salted, Vbulletin and Bcrypt. All of these passwords, except for those encrypted with bcrypt, were cracked in virtually zero seconds.
NOTE: At the time of publishing this blog the stable release of VBulletin was 5.4.5 updated November 14, 2018. The hashed VBulletin passwords we cracked for this research blog were obtained when VBulletin was on version 3.8.5. Therefore, these times to crack do not reflect the cryptographic strength of current hashed VBulletin passwords.
The process is still slower than usual, at a relatively sedate 15-ish passwords per second. In theory, this could still take thousands of years, but most people use relatively short passwords which are vulnerable to dictionary attacks. The average password length is just six characters, which can be cracked in around 10 hours.
If your password is based on any kind of pattern, using some combination of the above steps, it will eventually be cracked. Depending on how well-protected a website keeps your password, modern computers can make somewhere between 10,000 and 350 billion guesses per second.
Guys, just to share my experience with this cd:)passwords up to 14 characters (letters and digits) are cracked within minutes:) But, if you have a longer password and use special characters in your password, forget about it:)No way 2ff7e9595c
